Insurance and Assurance

When my daughter was young, I started to think about purchasing more life insurance for myself. I had a small policy through my employer; the kind meant to pay for burial expenses, but not much else. I knew that my parents would raise my daughter, if something happened to me. They weren’t wealthy and retirement was looming in their future. I worried that the cost of raising another child could have a negative impact on their retirement security. Read more »

Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing

A close friend decided to get a facelift when she reached her mid-fifties. She said she had more energy than most 35 year olds and wanted her exterior to reflect that. I saw her new look about ten days after surgery and decided I could live with my wrinkled forehead and baggy eyes. Time didn’t shake that opinion. It wasn’t just the pain of the surgery or the months of applying makeup to cover the scars. The results didn’t seem worth it. My friend’s face didn’t look that much younger, her neck still looked fifty and her once warm smile seemed pinched and tight. She was quite happy, however. I suppose that’s what mattered, but I still have a hard time understanding why someone would face the risks of surgery for this kind of procedure. Read more »
