Packing Up A Dream

The moving saga continues.

I have started packing. While this may seem premature, I’ve found it really pays to begin early. That’s especially true now, since I don’t have the strength to do a lot at one time. I began in the kitchen today. The strategy is to pack everything except frequently used items. This really speeds the process, once we have found our next residence.

I’m happy about the move, but have accepted that the NaNoWriMo challenge will fall by the wayside this year. That’s disappointing because I’ve done a lot of research. I’ve also created a chapter-by-chapter outline, named all the characters and drawn a map of the setting. The story has come to life and I’m itching to write it. I learned a lot from last year’s challenge and thought that this year’s story might eventually reach print.

I had even done some research on book printing. I have no illusions about a major publisher beating a path to my door. Any book printing will have to come out of my pocket and the last time I checked, that pocket only held a small amount of change. I’ll undoubtedly create an e-book to start, but a part of me longs to hold my book in my hands and turn the pages. Last year, a free copy was offered to those who finished the NaNoWriMo challenge. Although I finished the challenge, my book wasn’t ready for printing. I had hoped that this year would be different.

For now, I’m setting aside thoughts of writing, book printing and that elusive publisher banging at my door. Perhaps 2012 will be the year. In the meantime, I have a lot of packing to do.

Such a good idea to pack the non-essentials first.
Could also be a good way of finding out what is truly essential and what isn’t. Good luck house-hunting. We’ve been this house 10 years last month, and I could easily get rid of half of what’s in here.
    1. Keep husband
    2. Keep dog — no, wait, switch those numbers…

Good luck with the hunting and especially the packing. We moved into a smaller place andit was a nite mare.

We began our recent move on September 1 and finished on Sep 14. It was a lot of work so I can relate to how you are feeling. I took the opportunity to declutter while packing, getting rid of things I knew we hadn’t used and more than likely wouldn’t move. Good luck with finding a new home and the move.

Moving is an arduous process. When we moved into our current residence 12 years ago, my family teased me because in addition to labeling each box with the room, I also assigned a number to each. As each box was packed, I made a list of the numbers with a quick run down of what was in the box (and I insisted my family do the same), i.e.: #4 Kitchen – blender, mixer, utensils. #5 Kitchen – Tupperware, some pots/pans. You get the idea. As I said, my family teased me mercilessly, until after we moved. No one teased me then. “Hey, Mom, where’s my baseball stuff?” “Box marked Joey #7.” It was tons easier than rifling through all kinds of boxes looking for an item. Of course, not every single item in the box was on the list, but the major items were, and that made it easier to find like items. We used that list for weeks. :) Good luck with your home search and move!
