The Power Of TENS

A close friend was only in her twenties, when her left ankle began to disintegrate.  She didn’t complain a lot, but she began to curtail her normal activities, lose her sense of humor and substantially increase her alcohol intake.  Thankfully, her doctor sent her to a pain management clinic for a thorough evaluation.  The multidisciplinary team recommended surgery, special orthopedic shoe inserts, physical therapy, pain medications and a TENS unit.

Back then, I had never heard of TENS units and neither had my friend.  Of all the recommendations for dealing with her chronic pain, however, it proved to be the most beneficial.  Her TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) unit was about the size of a pager with a clip to fasten it to her belt or waistband.  Wires extended from the unit to her ankle, where electrodes were attached.  The unit delivered small non-painful impulses that effectively interrupted the pain in her ankle.  The relief was almost instantaneous and had none of the side effects of pain medications.  She didn’t have to wear it all day and the amount of time needed to provide effective relief gradually decreased with prolonged use.  Although it wasn’t a pretty thing, it was not detectible under a pair of slacks and Karen soon learned to adjust the wearing periods, so that she wasn’t using it, when she wanted to wear a skirt or dress.  Soon she stopped taking pain medication, her countenance relaxed and her alcohol consumption returned to a normal level.   The TENS unit truly restored her quality of life.

If you or someone you love is dealing with pain, this could truly make a difference.  The unit is not for everyone – those with seizure disorders and users of pacemakers, for example.  Be smart and talk with your doctor about the benefits of a TENS unit for you.
