The transit authority spent a fortune to revolutionize their system. So why was the bus still late? (100)

Hilda’s solution? Award punctual drivers with donuts from her bag. It beat being chairman of the bored. (108)

Who can forget TV’s most famous bus driver, Ralph Kramden? I didn’t know, however, that a statue had been erected in his honor at the Port Authority bus terminal.

Fading Heart
For 50 years, they loved each other and the richness of their simple country life. Then a dishonest man and two bullets ended their lives. (140)

Cold Heart
The robber shoved the rocker against the door, as if they’d escape, and counted the meager nest egg in the sugar bowl. That’s all they had? (140)

Enduring Heart
Ten years later, newlyweds purchased the old house. Soon children’s laughter warmed its walls. Humans are mortal, but love never dies. (136)

And now, one of my favorite songs.

Sergio, the lineman, was hard at work one day.

Exactly just what happened? It is difficult to say,

but a sudden jolt of volts electrified his girth.

Detaching from his perch, he flew back down to earth.

Some say it was the landing, some say it was the surge.

No matter what the cause, it was a funeral dirge for Serg.

I couldn’t write about a lineman without thinking of Witchita Lineman. I really liked the pictures that accompany the song.

Muddy Clothes
“Don’t sleep and ride”, Mama warned. What did she know?
Something about rain and dirt paths, Joe realized, when he awoke in a mud pit. (135)

Hold That Pose
“Don’t slouch.”
Mama had been right about getting stuck in this position. Right about the crossed eye thing too. (114)

Sit and Doze
“Someday you’ll appreciate home.”
Right again, Joe reflected. Minus food and housing, he attempted to hibernate on his bike. (123)

Remember! Mama Knows Best
