“We don’t need an RV, Bill. We have a home.”

“It’s for vacations, Diane.”

“I’ll still be cleaning house and cooking meals. That’s not my idea of a vacation.”

The Perfect Thank You

For the last two weeks, Edna had followed the same ritual. Rise at seven, have breakfast and carry a second cup of coffee to the study. It brought Morris closer. It had been their habit until his illness had intervened. Morris would lean back in his worn leather desk chair perusing the newspaper and working on his daily crossword puzzle. Edna had written her cards.

“We should have bought stock in Hallmark, Edna.”

“You’re in charge of investments, Morris.”

“Rudy?”

Rapid waves of emotion cross his face: disbelief, repulsion, helplessness. The power suit and Italian leather briefcase demark his station, as the grocery bag holding my possessions marks mine.

“What are you doing here, Rudy?”

“I sleep here sometimes, Mark. When it’s too rainy or cold outside.”

He looks around the parking garage and shakes his head.
