The car began its slow ascent to the house at the top of the hill. Like many of the homes on Beach Road, the drive was walled by trees. Unlike the others, the Conley’s had a large number of sculptures interspersed with the trees at the drive’s edge.

Her grandmother’s artistic talents had not been limited to pottery and birdhouses. Emma had been a gifted painter, although her interest had waned quickly. Several paintings had been sold through Matt’s gallery and brought a respectable price, but despite his urgings, she produced no more. Instead, she began to collect trash and fashion it into sculptures. Kelly wasn’t fond of this type of sculpture, but could appreciate the artists’ talent. Emma’s works were devoid of that talent. Her grandmother had never owned a computer, but had salvaged old cases to build one piece. An arm had been fashioned from a rusted rake, which impaled a mounted trout on one point.

Kathleen had probably elbowed him, although he was only voicing the sentiments of all her siblings.  Though Jerry had spoken softly, his voice was loud enough to be heard clearly around the hushed gravesite.  There were a couple of soft gasps amongst the townsfolk, but curiosity prevailed.  Kelly kept her head bent, grateful for her black veil,  and remained at the grave for another minute before walking with calm dignity towards the limo.  Keep it together for two more hours.  Attend the luncheon in the church hall and be gracious.  Hold your head up and don’t let them get to you.    Head down would have been better, she thought a moment later, as her heel slipped into a small hole and she sailed towards a tombstone.
